According to recent data from the American Institute of Architects, home sizes are stabilizing while accessibility and aging-in-place solutions continue to be among the primary trends in residential design.
Outdoor living spaces, indoor/outdoor areas that are mixed, and outdoor firepits also continue to be key trends, according to the AIA's most recent quarterly "Home Design Trends Study," which was based on a survey of more than 300 architects. Smart appliances that save energy without losing design or convenience are also becoming more and more well-liked.
According to Kermit Baker, senior economist for the Washington, DC-based AIA, "The overall square footage of homes is now leveling off, and is even decreasing in entry level homes." Building costs play such a big factor now that trying to design smaller homes with more livability is the goal."
Due to growing construction prices, "many clients are scaling back their home addition/renovation projects or canceling them altogether due to rising construction costs," according to the AIA, because lot sizes are sometimes constrained in older, established communities.
The AIA highlighted that large, walk-in showers and sensor faucets were cited as among the top features being sought in bathrooms. Bathrooms continue to be a popular emphasis in homes, with more enterprises indicating that the number of bathrooms per home is increasing.
In a similar vein, the percentage of businesses reporting a rise in the quantity and size of kitchens also increased, with outdoor kitchens and functioning pantries among the elements whose popularity increased the most noticeably, according to the AIA.
All in all, outdoor living spaces tend to be on the rise of where people want to enjoy however, kitchens and bathrooms are still staying consistent as the main areas of a home remodel.
